 SUNDAY 23rd

Kasteel De Haar

JVH_7555-300x20030 minutes from Amsterdam is Kasteel De Haar. Originally built in 1391 it was in the De Haar family until 1441 when the last De Haar died with no male heir. Which is shitty since maybe he had a daughter that wanted a castle. After dude dies it was passed to the Van Zuylen family then in 1641 the last male Van Zuylen died — of dehydration from trying to make a son — the castle fell into ruins and then in 1890 Etienne Gustave Frédéric Baron van Zuylen van Nyevelt van de Haar was given the castle, which is ALSO the plot of the John Goodman movie, King Ralph. Etienne Gustave Frédéric Baron van Zuylen van Nyevelt van de Haar knew he had a long ass name, but had to be shocked when out of fucking NO-WHERE he was given a fucking CASTLE. So he’s married to this chick named Baroness Hélène de Rothschild who’s loaded to the tits and she pays to have the castle rebuilt. They hire a famous architect named Pierre Cuypers and he soaks them for 15 years rebuilding the castle to its current glory of 200 rooms and 30 bathrooms. Wikipedia lists the condition of the castle as “good” which seems insulting.

Finally, you should know that although the castle is entrusted to the foundation that maintains and runs the castle the van Zuylen has use of the castle for one month a year, so if you see a dude walking around in a robe, that’s a van Zuylen.
